When people say "AI," they could mean very different things. A spam filter and ChatGPT are both AI — but they work completely differently. Here are the 4 types every kid should understand.

Type 1: Reactive AI (No Memory)

This is the oldest and simplest type. Reactive AI responds to the current input but forgets everything immediately after.

Example: The chess computer Deep Blue that beat world champion Garry Kasparov in 1997. It analysed the board and made the best move — but it could not remember any previous games.

Where you see it: Basic spam filters, simple recommendation engines, game bots in easy video games.

Type 2: Limited Memory AI (Learns Over Time)

This AI remembers recent data and improves. Most modern AI falls into this category.

Example: Self-driving cars. They observe road conditions, traffic and weather over time to make better decisions.

Where you see it: YouTube recommendations, Netflix, your phone camera, Siri and Google Assistant.

Type 3: Generative AI (Creates New Things)

This is the newest and most exciting type. Generative AI does not just answer questions — it creates new content: text, images, music, code and video.

Example: ChatGPT writes essays. DALL-E creates images. Suno makes music. Pika makes videos.

Where you see it: ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney, Canva AI, GitHub Copilot.

Type 4: AGI — The Future Type (Not Here Yet)

Artificial General Intelligence would be as smart as a human across all tasks. It could learn anything, do any job, solve any problem — just like a person. This does not exist yet. Most scientists think it is still years or decades away.
