History essays are about your thinking — your analysis of why events happened, how they connect, and what they mean. AI can make you a stronger thinker, but only if you use it the right way.

Step 1: Build Context with AI (Before You Write)

Instead of starting with a blank page, use AI to build mental scaffolding. Ask:

"I need to write an essay about the causes of World War 1 for Year 8. Explain the main causes briefly. Then tell me 3 interesting angles or arguments I could take in my essay."

Pick ONE of those angles that interests you. That angle becomes YOUR argument.

Step 2: Find the Interesting Details

Generic essays cite general facts. Great essays have specific details. Prompt:

"Give me 5 surprising or lesser-known facts about [your topic] that most Year 8 students would not know."

Always verify these facts in your textbook or a reliable history website before using them.

Step 3: Write Your Own Draft First

Write the entire essay yourself. Do not look at AI while writing. Just use your notes.

This feels harder — but YOUR ideas in YOUR words is what makes a good essay. AI-generated text has a recognisable generic quality that teachers and AI detectors both spot.

Step 4: Use AI to Improve Your Draft

Now paste your own draft into ChatGPT and use these prompts:

  • "Is my argument clear? Where does it get confusing?"
  • "What counterarguments should I address?"
  • "Where could I add more specific evidence to support my points?"
  • "Is my conclusion strong? Does it answer the essay question directly?"

Read the feedback. Rewrite the relevant sections yourself based on it.

The "Living Person" Test

Before submitting, read your essay aloud. Does it sound like you? Or does it sound like a Wikipedia article? If it sounds like Wikipedia, you have let AI do too much of the thinking. Rewrite those sections in your own voice.
