✅ What you'll learn
- How to spot AI in everyday devices and apps
- Why YouTube, Netflix and Spotify use AI
- How voice assistants like Siri use AI
- Why autocorrect is actually AI
💡 Perfect if you're thinking...
Most kids have been using AI for years without realising it. Once you know what to look for, you'll start spotting it everywhere. Here's your AI detective guide to the 15 most common places AI is hiding in everyday life.
In your phone
- Face unlock — An AI model learned exactly what your face looks like, even in different lighting or with glasses on.
- Autocorrect and predictive text — AI trained on billions of messages predicts what word you'll type next and fixes your spelling.
- Voice assistant (Siri, Google Assistant) — Speech recognition AI converts your voice to text; natural language AI figures out what you mean; text-to-speech AI talks back.
- Camera portrait mode — Computer vision AI identifies where you end and the background begins, creating the blurred background effect.
- Photo search in Google Photos — Search "beach" and it finds your beach photos. AI learned to recognise thousands of objects and scenes.
In your TV and streaming apps
- Netflix "Because you watched..." — An AI model studied what millions of people watched before and after similar shows, and predicts what you'll enjoy next.
- YouTube autoplay — Same idea. YouTube's recommendation AI is so good (and so sticky) that it accounts for 70% of what people watch on the platform.
- Spotify/Apple Music Discover Weekly — An AI analyses your listening history alongside millions of other users to create a personalised playlist every Monday.
In your home
- Smart thermostat (Nest, etc.) — Learns your schedule and temperature preferences over time, adjusting automatically.
- Robot vacuum (Roomba, etc.) — Uses computer vision and navigation AI to map your home and avoid obstacles.
- Smart doorbell cameras — AI detects the difference between a person, an animal, and a passing car — only alerting you for the right things.
- Smart speakers (Alexa, Google Home) — Always-on AI listening for its wake word, then processing your request.
In school and apps
- Spam filter in email — Blocks junk mail by recognising patterns of spam that AI learned from millions of examples.
- Duolingo — Adapts which exercises to show based on what you find difficult, making it personalised to your learning pace.
- Google Translate — Neural machine translation AI converts between 133 languages with remarkable accuracy.
The AI Spy activity
This is Mission 1's first activity in the AI Adventures course. Go on a hunt through your home and try to find 15 examples of AI. For each one, write down:
- What the device or app is
- What the AI is doing
- Whether it's making a prediction, recognising something, or generating something
Most families are amazed at how many they find. A typical home has 20-40 AI-powered interactions per day — most invisible.
