Easy Cartoon Drawing Ideas for Kids: Step-by-Step
Every great artist starts with basic shapes — circles, squares, and triangles can become any cartoon character you can imagine!
What You'll Need
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Paper
- Coloured markers or crayons
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Start with a Circle Head
Draw a circle for the head of your cartoon character. Almost every cartoon character starts this way — a round head is the foundation of cartoon drawing.
Step 2: Add Large Cartoon Eyes
Draw two large oval eyes on the lower half of the circle. In cartoons, the eyes are always bigger than realistic — that is what makes characters look cute and expressive.
Step 3: Keep the Nose Small
Add a tiny dot or small triangle for the nose. Cartoon noses are always much smaller than real noses — this keeps the focus on the big expressive eyes.
Step 4: Draw a Big Smile
Add a wide curved mouth. A U-shape makes a happy character. A flat line looks neutral. A downward curve looks sad. Emotions in cartoons come mostly from the mouth shape.
Step 5: Add Simple Body Shapes
Below the head, draw a rounded rectangle or oval for the body. Cartoon bodies are much smaller than the head — this is called being "top heavy" and it is what gives cartoons their cute look.
Step 6: Add Stick-Like Arms and Legs
Draw simple arms and legs coming off the body. They can be thin lines with oval hands and feet — simple is better in cartoon style.
Step 7: Give Your Character a Unique Feature
Add something that makes your character special — a hat, glasses, a bowtie, stripes, or a cape. This one detail turns a generic cartoon into your own character.
Step 8: Add Hair and Finishing Touches
Draw hair on top of the head — zigzag lines, spiky points, or smooth curves. Add ears on the sides. Give your character a background or an accessory they are holding.
Adding Colour
Pick a bold colour scheme for your character — bright, contrasting colours like red and blue or yellow and purple look great in cartoon style. Colour the whole character without leaving white gaps.
Tips from Parikshet
- Start simple — a circle, two ovals, and a curve is already a cartoon face!
- Exaggerate everything in cartoons: bigger eyes, smaller nose, wider smile than you think looks right.
- Draw the same character five times in a row and each time it will look better.
