A child who asks Canva AI to generate five different poster designs for a school project is exposed to five different visual styles, layouts, and colour combinations. That exposure builds visual vocabulary — which is itself a creative resource.

Rapid prototyping
AI lets children try many ideas quickly. Instead of spending an hour drawing one character, a child can generate several concepts in minutes and then choose which to develop further. This iteration is itself a creative practice.

How AI can reduce creativity:

Skipping the struggle
The process of wrestling with a creative problem — of not knowing what to say and working through it — builds creative muscle. If AI always provides the answer to "what should I write about?" before a child has tried to find their own answer, that muscle does not develop.

Passive acceptance of AI output
Children who accept AI outputs without questioning, modifying, or pushing back become curators rather than creators. The critical difference is whether the child is making active decisions or passively approving what the machine produces.

Homogenisation
AI tools trained on popular styles tend to produce outputs that look and feel like the most common versions of things — the most average poem, the most typical poster. Children who rely heavily on AI risk gravitating towards a bland middle rather than developing a distinctive voice.
