How to Draw a Baby Deer: Step-by-Step for Kids

Baby deer, called fawns, are among the cutest animals in the forest. With their big eyes, long legs, and white spots, they are wonderful to draw!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Brown, white, and tan markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Body

Draw a slightly flattened oval for the fawn's body. The back end is slightly rounder and the front is a bit narrower. Leave space above for the head and neck.

Step 2: Draw the Head

Draw a smaller circle or oval above and slightly left of the body. Connect it to the body with a graceful curved neck — the neck of a deer is long and elegant even in babies.

Step 3: Draw the Big Eyes

Baby deer have very large, gentle eyes. Draw two large ovals on the head, taking up a good portion of the face. Add small dark pupils and a white highlight dot in each eye.

Step 4: Add Ears and Nose

Draw two large, leaf-shaped ears on the top sides of the head — deer ears are big and rounded. Add a small oval nose at the tip of the snout and a tiny curved mouth below it.

Step 5: Draw the Thin Legs

Below the body, draw four long, spindly legs. Baby deer legs look almost too thin and long for their bodies! The back legs bend differently from the front ones — the back legs have a backward knee joint.

Step 6: Add the Tiny Tail

At the back of the body, draw a small fluffy stub of a tail — white on the underside. Deer flash this white tail as a warning signal when they run.

Step 7: Draw the White Spots

Across the back and sides of the body, draw small oval and irregular white spots. Fawns have these white spots for camouflage in dappled forest light. Scatter about ten to fifteen spots across the body.

Step 8: Add Hooves and Final Details

At the bottom of each leg, draw two small rounded rectangular shapes for the split hooves. Add a fluffy texture to the ears and a soft belly line.

Adding Colour

The body is warm reddish-brown. The spots, belly, inner ears, and tail underside are white or cream. The nose is dark brown or black. The eyes are dark with warm highlights.

Tips from Parikshet

  • The legs should look almost comically long and thin — that is what makes fawns so endearing!
  • The white spots are essential — without them it is just a plain deer, not a fawn.
  • Large, soft eyes are the most important feature for making the deer look cute and innocent.
