The crab is a brilliant beach creature to draw — with its wide flat shell, big pincer claws, and little legs scuttling sideways. It's a fun, characterful animal that's surprisingly simple to draw. Parikshet shows you how to draw a crab step by step.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil and eraser
  • Red or orange markers
  • White for the eyes
  • Black pen for outlines

How to Draw a Crab Step by Step

  1. Draw the shell (body) — a wide oval or rounded rectangle, wider than it is tall. The crab's body is flat and broad.
  2. Add the eyes — two eyes on short stalks poking up from the top of the shell. Crab eyes are on little stalks so they can see all around.
  3. Add a small mouth — a simple mouth at the front of the shell for a friendly cartoon crab.
  4. Draw the two big claws — a large pincer (claw) on each side at the front, made of two parts that open and close. The big claws are the crab's signature feature.
  5. Add the legs — three legs on each side (six in total, plus the two claws makes eight limbs), bent at angles like little zigzags.
  6. Add shell texture — a few bumps, dots, or a line pattern on the shell.
  7. Add a beach setting (optional) — some sand, a shell, or a wave.
  8. Colour — bright red or orange, which is how many crabs look (especially when cooked, but lots are naturally reddish too).
💡 Parikshet's Tip: The two big pincer claws at the front are what make a crab instantly recognisable — draw them large and bold, each made of two parts like a pair of pliers. The eyes on stalks are the second key feature. Get those two right and you've definitely drawn a crab.

🌟 Did You Know?

Crabs walk SIDEWAYS! This is because of the way their legs bend — moving sideways is faster and easier for them. Crabs also have their skeleton on the OUTSIDE of their body (called an exoskeleton), and they grow by shedding their old shell and growing a new, bigger one. There are thousands of crab species, from tiny pea crabs to the giant Japanese spider crab, whose legs can span nearly 4 metres!

Crab Drawing Key Features

  • Wide flat shell — broad body, wider than tall
  • Two big pincer claws — the #1 identifier
  • Eyes on stalks — poking up to see all around
  • Six legs — three on each side, bent at angles
