How to Draw a Deer: Step-by-Step for Kids

Deer are graceful, gentle animals of the forest. This guide shows you how to draw a beautiful deer with elegant antlers and a peaceful expression.

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Brown and tan markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Body Oval

Draw a large horizontal oval for the deer's body. The oval is slightly wider than it is tall. This is the main mass of the deer.

Step 2: Draw the Neck and Head

From the front of the body oval, draw two curved lines angling upward to form a long, elegant neck. At the top, draw a small oval for the head — much smaller than the body.

Step 3: Add the Ears

On each side of the head, draw large leaf-shaped ears. Deer ears are large and can rotate to hear sounds from all directions.

Step 4: Draw the Antlers

From the top of the head between the ears, draw two main antler beams curving upward and outward. From each main beam, add two or three smaller tine branches pointing upward. Antlers are like branching trees.

Step 5: Add the Face

Draw a large, soft eye on the side of the head. Add a small dark oval nose at the tip of the snout. The face should look peaceful and gentle.

Step 6: Draw the Legs

Below the body, draw four slender legs. The front legs angle slightly forward; the back legs have a distinctive backward bend at the hock joint. Add small split hooves at each foot.

Step 7: Add the Short Tail

At the back of the body, draw a small fluffy white tail. When a deer is calm, the tail is lowered; when alarmed, it raises and flashes white as a warning.

Step 8: Add Fur Texture

Add short fur stroke lines around the neck, chest, and belly area. Add a few wrinkle lines at the leg joints. Draw the inner ear with a lighter tone.

Adding Colour

The body is reddish-brown in summer or grey-brown in winter. The belly, tail underside, throat, and inner ears are white or cream. The antlers are medium brown or tan. The nose is dark brown.

Tips from Parikshet

  • The neck should be long and elegant — a short neck makes deer look like a dog!
  • Antlers branch like trees — start with the main beam and add smaller tines off it.
  • The backward-bending back leg joint (the hock) is what makes deer look like deer — get that right!
