How to Draw a Cute Panda: Step-by-Step for Kids

Giant pandas are one of the most beloved animals in the world, with their distinctive black and white colouring. Here is how to draw a cute sitting panda!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Black and white markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Round Head

Draw a large circle for the panda's head — pandas have very round, chubby faces. Make it nice and circular.

Step 2: Add the Black Eye Patches

Draw two large oval or bean-shaped black patches around the eye area. These patches are one of the most distinctive features of a panda. Position them in the upper-middle area of the face, one on each side of the nose centre.

Step 3: Draw the Eyes

Inside each black patch, draw a small oval eye. Add a white highlight dot inside each eye. The contrast of white in black patches is what gives pandas their unique look.

Step 4: Add the Black Ears

On top of the head, draw two round black ears — one on each side. Panda ears are round and solid black. They sit on the very top edge of the head.

Step 5: Draw the Nose and Mouth

In the centre of the face, draw a small round black nose. Below it, add an inverted Y shape or a simple curved smile. Keep the lower face (muzzle area) white.

Step 6: Draw the Body

Below the head, draw a large rounded rectangle or oval for the sitting panda body. The body is wide and plump — pandas are very chubby animals!

Step 7: Add the Black Arms

Draw two black arms on each side of the body. If the panda is holding bamboo, show one arm raised with a bamboo stick. The arms end in round black paws.

Step 8: Draw the Legs and Feet

At the bottom of the sitting body, draw two short rounded legs extending forward. The paws at the end are black. Add a bamboo stalk next to the panda for a classic scene.

Adding Colour

The whole drawing is just two colours — black and white. The eye patches, ears, arms, and legs are solid black. Everything else is white. Use grey shadow shading on the white areas to add depth.

Tips from Parikshet

  • The black eye patches are the most important feature — make them large and well-shaped or it won't look like a panda.
  • Pandas are very round everywhere — no sharp angles or pointy shapes anywhere on the body.
  • A few bamboo shoots next to the panda instantly complete the scene and add context.
