How to Draw a Pineapple: Step-by-Step for Kids

Pineapples are one of the most fun fruits to draw — their diamond scale pattern and spiky crown make them instantly recognisable and satisfying to complete!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Ruler (optional)
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Yellow, green, and brown markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Main Body

Draw a large oval in the centre of your paper — slightly taller than it is wide, and narrowing a little toward the top. This is the pineapple body.

Step 2: Draw Diagonal Lines One Way

Draw a series of diagonal lines across the oval going from lower-left to upper-right, spaced about equally apart. These lines should curve slightly to follow the oval shape.

Step 3: Draw Diagonal Lines the Other Way

Now draw a second set of diagonal lines crossing the first set, going from lower-right to upper-left. This criss-cross pattern creates diamond shapes across the pineapple surface — this is the signature pineapple texture.

Step 4: Add Small Dots in Each Diamond

In the centre of each diamond shape, draw a small dot or tiny star shape. These represent the small bumpy eyes on the pineapple skin surface.

Step 5: Draw the Crown Base

At the very top of the oval body, draw a short cylinder or narrowing shape as the base of the crown — this is where the leaves attach.

Step 6: Draw the Crown Leaves

From the crown base, draw a cluster of long, pointed leaves radiating upward. Vary the lengths — some tall, some shorter. The leaves are narrow and slightly curved. Draw about six to eight leaves.

Step 7: Add Leaf Detail Lines

Down the centre of each crown leaf, draw a single thin centre vein line. Add tiny spine points along the edges of the leaves for a spiky, realistic look.

Step 8: Add Shading

Shade the left side of the pineapple body slightly darker to give it a rounded, three-dimensional appearance. Shade the undersides of the crown leaves darker too.

Adding Colour

The pineapple body is yellow-gold, with the diamond edges a slightly darker brown or orange. The crown leaves are various shades of green — dark green at the tips, yellow-green at the base. Add a highlight area on the upper-right of the body in lighter yellow.
