How to Draw a Raccoon: Step-by-Step for Kids

Raccoons are clever nocturnal animals famous for their mask-like face markings and ringed tails. Here is how to draw the most recognisable masked bandit of the animal world!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Grey, black, and white markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Round Face

Draw a large circle for the raccoon's face. Raccoons have broad, round faces. Leave the bottom of the circle open slightly for the muzzle area.

Step 2: Draw the Black Mask

Draw the iconic black mask across the eye area of the face. It looks like two large oval patches connected across the nose bridge — like a superhero or bandit mask. This is the raccoon's most distinctive feature.

Step 3: Draw the Eyes

Inside the black mask, draw two round eyes with white circles showing through. Add small dark pupils and a white highlight in each. The contrast of white eyes inside black mask patches gives raccoons their mischievous look.

Step 4: Add the Nose and Muzzle

Below the mask, draw a wider muzzle area in lighter grey. Add a small rounded triangular nose at the centre. Draw a simple curved mouth below.

Step 5: Draw the Rounded Ears

At the top of the head, draw two small, rounded ears. Raccoon ears are relatively small and sit upright. Add a lighter inner ear area inside each ear.

Step 6: Draw the Body

Below the head, draw a plump oval or rounded rectangular body. Raccoons are stocky and chubby. Add short front paws reaching forward — raccoons are famous for using their nimble front paws to handle food.

Step 7: Draw the Ringed Tail

From the back of the body, draw a long, bushy tail curling around to one side. The tail has alternating dark and light rings — about five to seven bands alternating between dark grey-black and lighter grey.

Step 8: Add Fur Texture and Stripes

Add short fur stroke lines all over the body and face. The raccoon has dark grey-brown fur on the back and lighter grey or white on the belly and face outside the mask.

Adding Colour

Grey is the dominant colour — dark grey-brown for the back, medium grey for the sides, light grey or white for the belly. The mask and tail rings are near-black. The nose is dark brown or black. Inner ears are pale pink.

Tips from Parikshet

  • The black mask is the whole key to making the drawing look like a raccoon — get the mask shape right first.
  • The ringed tail is the second most important feature — five to seven clear alternating bands is the target.
  • Draw the front paws holding a piece of food (a fish or berry) for a classic raccoon scene!
