How to Draw a Frog: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids

Frogs are fun and easy to draw — with their wide mouths, bulging eyes, and webbed feet, they are full of personality! Here is how to draw a cheerful cartoon frog.

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Green, yellow-green, and white markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Wide Head-Body

Frogs do not have a distinct neck — draw a wide, flat oval that serves as both the head and upper body combined. Make it wider than it is tall, like a squashed circle.

Step 2: Draw the Bulging Eyes

At the very top of the flat head oval, draw two large circle eyes sitting on top of the head — almost like they are perched on the head rather than set into it. Frogs' eyes bulge upward so they can see above the water surface.

Step 3: Add Pupils and Highlights

Inside each eye circle, draw a large horizontal oval pupil — frog pupils are distinctive horizontal slits. Add a small white highlight circle in the upper area of each eye.

Step 4: Draw the Wide Smiling Mouth

Just below the eye line, draw a very wide curved smile — the mouth stretches almost the full width of the head. Add small nostrils (two tiny dots) above the mouth between the eyes.

Step 5: Draw the Body Below

Below the head oval, add a rounded body shape that is slightly smaller — the body narrows a little compared to the wide head. The overall shape is a bit like a rounded V when viewed from above.

Step 6: Draw the Front Arms

On each side of the lower body, draw short thin front arms. At the end of each arm, draw three or four elongated fingers — frogs have visible fingers on their front feet.

Step 7: Draw the Back Legs

Frogs have powerful back legs for jumping. Draw two large bent legs on each side of the rear body — the thigh comes out to the side, then the lower leg bends sharply downward. At the end, draw large webbed feet with four long toes connected by webbing.

Step 8: Add Belly and Spots

Draw a lighter oval on the belly for the cream or pale green underbelly. Add a few circular spots on the back for decoration.

Adding Colour

The back and top are bright mid-green. The underbelly and lower jaw are pale yellow-green or cream. The eyes are gold or yellow. The webbing between the toes can be a slightly lighter transparent green.

Tips from Parikshet

  • The eyes on TOP of the head (not on the sides) are the most important frog feature — this is what makes frogs unique!
  • A very wide smile takes up nearly the full width of the head — don't make it too small.
  • The big, powerful back legs are what make frogs look ready to leap — don't draw them too small.
