How to Draw a Baby Elephant: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids

Baby elephants are among the most adorable animals on Earth — round, wrinkly, and curious. Here is how to draw a cute little elephant calf!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Grey, pink, and light tan markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Round Baby Body

Draw a large circle or chubby oval for the baby elephant's body. Baby elephants are rounder and plumper than adults — a nearly circular body shape is perfect.

Step 2: Draw the Large Head

Draw a large rounded square or oval for the head — almost as big as the body. Baby elephants have huge heads relative to their bodies. Attach it to the body with a very short, thick neck.

Step 3: Draw the Enormous Ears

On each side of the head, draw very large fan-shaped ears. Elephant ears are huge — nearly as big as the head itself. Make them flap outward from the sides of the head.

Step 4: Draw the Curled Trunk

From the lower front of the head, draw the trunk — a long, thick cylinder that curves and curls at the tip. Baby elephants often curl their trunk upward in a curious pose. Add two nostril holes at the trunk tip.

Step 5: Draw Small Tusks (Optional)

Just below the trunk base on each side of the mouth, draw two small curved tusk stubs. Baby elephants have tiny tusks just starting to appear.

Step 6: Draw the Four Pillar Legs

Below the body, draw four wide, column-like legs — elephant legs are very thick and column-shaped. Add rounded toes across the bottom of each foot. Baby elephant feet are wide and flat.

Step 7: Draw the Tiny Tail

At the back of the body, draw a thin tail with a small tuft of coarse hair at the tip — like a tiny tassel.

Step 8: Add Wrinkle Details

Draw gentle curved wrinkle lines around the trunk (horizontal rings along its length), at the leg joints, and around the ears. Elephants have wonderfully wrinkled skin.

Adding Colour

Baby elephants are a warm medium grey. Add a slightly darker grey for the wrinkle shadows and a lighter grey for the underbelly. The inside of the ears has a pinkish tone. The toenails are a yellowish-white.

Tips from Parikshet

  • The trunk wrinkle rings are what make the trunk look three-dimensional and elephant-like — draw horizontal lines across it.
  • Enormous ears are key — if the ears aren't bigger than you think looks right, make them bigger still.
  • A curled-up trunk tip makes the baby elephant look curious and playful — this pose is more charming than a straight-down trunk.
