How to Draw Cheese: Step-by-Step for Kids

A wedge of Swiss cheese with those iconic holes is a classic and fun drawing subject — great for practising shapes and shading!

What You'll Need

• Pencil
• Eraser
• Paper
• Yellow, gold, and light brown markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Wedge Triangle

Draw a triangle for the main cheese wedge shape. Two sides are equal length and the base is flat — like a slice of pie or pizza. This is the classic Swiss cheese wedge shape.

Step 2: Add the Thickness (3D)

To make the cheese look 3D, draw a second parallel triangle slightly behind and to the right of the first. Connect the corresponding corners with short lines to form the wedge depth.

Step 3: Add the Rind Edge

Along the outer curved edge of the wedge (the bottom arc of the pie shape), draw a slightly darker, slightly thicker band — this is the rind of the cheese. Real cheese has a slightly different texture at the edge.

Step 4: Draw the Large Holes

Across the face of the cheese wedge, draw several large oval holes — the signature feature of Swiss cheese (Emmental). Vary the sizes — some large, some medium. Scatter them irregularly across the face.

Step 5: Add Holes on the Side Face

On the side face of the 3D wedge, add a few more holes — but these appear as slightly squashed ovals because of the perspective angle.

Step 6: Draw Inner Hole Shading

Inside each hole, shade one side darker to show the hole has depth. The inner shadow should curve following the oval shape of the hole.

Step 7: Add Cheese Texture

On the cut face of the cheese, add very subtle horizontal shading lines to suggest the smooth, dense texture of the cheese interior. Keep these lines light.

Step 8: Add Dripping or Melting Effect (Optional)

For fun, add a few drops of melted cheese dripping from the bottom corner of the wedge — curved drip shapes with rounded tips pointing downward.

Adding Colour

The main cheese body is bright golden yellow. The rind edge is a slightly darker golden brown. The holes are a darker yellow-brown inside with a very dark shadow on one side. The top surface can be a slightly lighter, creamier yellow than the cut face.

• The 3D side view adds a lot — even a simple two-line depth creates a much more impressive drawing than a flat triangle.
