How to Draw a Scarecrow: Step-by-Step for Kids
Scarecrows are the guardians of the harvest field — but in Halloween style, they can be wonderfully spooky! Here is how to draw a classic Halloween scarecrow.
What You'll Need
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Paper
- Brown, orange, and black markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Draw the Cross Post
Draw a tall vertical post near the centre of your paper, extending from top to bottom. Then draw a shorter horizontal cross-bar about one-third down from the top. This T-shape or cross is the frame that holds the scarecrow up.
Step 2: Draw the Head
At the top of the vertical post, draw a round burlap sack head — slightly lumpy and uneven, not a perfect circle. Scarecrow heads are stuffed sacks, so they look a bit squashed and irregular.
Step 3: Add the Stitched Face
Draw a spooky or goofy face using simple stitched lines — X marks for eyes, a wide stitched smile using dashes for teeth. Add small button or coin shapes for pupils. The stitched face is what makes scarecrows look hand-made.
Step 4: Draw the Hat
On top of the head, draw a wide-brimmed floppy hat — an old farmer's hat that is battered and tilted at an angle. Add a band around the base of the crown and a torn or bent brim.
Step 5: Draw the Body and Clothes
Around the cross-post, draw old, baggy clothes — a tattered shirt or jacket hanging from the horizontal arm bar. The clothes should look loose, old, and slightly tattered with ragged hem edges.
Step 6: Draw the Straw
From the cuffs, collar, and hem of the clothes, draw straw sticking out in short jagged bunches — this is the stuffing that makes the scarecrow's body. Draw wispy straw strands at the wrists, ankles, and collar.
Step 7: Draw the Hands and Gloves
At the ends of the cross-bar arms, draw old work gloves with spread fingers. Let straw spill out from the tops of the gloves.
Step 8: Draw the Patch Legs
Below the main body, draw two mismatched pant legs hanging down. Add patch squares on the pants — scarecrow clothes are always well-patched and mended. Draw boots or stuffed shoes at the bottom.
Adding Colour
Old brown and tan for the burlap head and sack stuffing. Faded blue or tan for the patched overalls. A dark brown weathered hat. Straw is yellow-gold. Use a dark orange pumpkin background sky for Halloween atmosphere.
Tips from Parikshet
- The straw sticking out from cuffs and collar is the most important detail — without it the figure just looks like a person on a stick.
- Make the hat tilt at an odd angle — a perfectly straight hat looks too tidy for a battered scarecrow.
- Patch squares on the clothing add story and character — scarecrows wear old, much-repaired farm clothes.
