This full-length graphite 3D letter tutorial covers the complete technique from choosing a letter through to adding cast shadows and highlights — producing a professional-looking dimensional letter drawing using only pencils.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil grades: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B or 8B
  • Kneaded eraser (for adding highlights)
  • Blending stump
  • Ruler
  • White drawing paper

How to Draw 3D Letters with Graphite (Full Tutorial)

  1. Choose your letter — bold, geometric letters work best: A, B, E, F, H, M, T. Avoid thin letters for your first attempt.
  2. Draw the letter large and thick — at least 10cm tall. All strokes should be at least 1.5cm wide to show the dimensional depth.
  3. Add depth lines with a ruler — from every external corner, draw lines at a consistent 45-degree angle, all the same length (about 2cm). Use HB for these guide lines.
  4. Connect the endpoints — join the ends of each depth line to form the side faces of the letter.
  5. Identify light source — decide where light comes from (e.g., upper left). Side faces facing away from light will be dark.
  6. Shade side faces — use 6B for darkest faces, 4B for medium faces. Blend smoothly.
  7. Shade front face — light 2B gradient, lighter toward the light source. Leave a thin highlight strip near the top light edge.
  8. Add cast shadow — draw the shadow shape on the paper surface, blending outward from the letter base.
  9. Add reflected light — use a kneaded eraser to pull out a thin light line along the darkest edge of each side face. This subtle detail makes the whole drawing look professional.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: Reflected light — a thin bright line along the very edge of the darkest face — is the detail that separates beginner from advanced 3D lettering. It represents light bouncing off the table surface back onto the underside of the letter.
