How to Draw and Colour a Jurassic World Velociraptor: Step-by-Step for Kids
This drawing and colouring guide for the Jurassic World Velociraptor will have you creating a fearsome prehistoric predator ready for the big screen!
What You'll Need
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Paper
- Green, grey-blue, and orange coloured markers or pencils
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Draw the Athletic Body Outline
Sketch a lean, forward-leaning body — like a greyhound crossed with a bird. The body is widest at the chest and tapers toward both the head end and the tail end.
Step 2: Add the Long Neck and Head
Draw a long, curved neck rising from the front of the body. At the end, draw a narrow rectangular head with a pointed snout. The jaw line should be very elongated — about one third the total body length.
Step 3: Draw the Teeth
Open the jaw slightly and fill it with sharp, serrated teeth curving backward. Show both upper and lower teeth. The teeth are the most dramatic detail — make them sharp and plentiful.
Step 4: Draw the Alert Eye
Just above the mid-point of the head, draw a round eye with a vertical slit pupil. Raptor eyes are alert and intelligent — give them a sense of predatory focus.
Step 5: Draw the Powerful Back Legs
Draw strong thighs, angled lower legs, and three-toed feet. The foot posture is digitigrade — walking on toes only, like a bird. The deadly sickle claw on the second toe should be held raised and clearly visible.
Step 6: Draw the Compact Front Arms
Add two small front arms held close to the chest. Add three-fingered clawed hands. In Jurassic World, the raptors' arms are a bit larger than real Velociraptors — they use them for climbing and grasping.
Step 7: Draw the Horizontal Tail
Extend a long, straight tail horizontally behind the body. The tail is rigid and acts as a counterbalance during running and turning — it never droops down like a lizard's tail.
Step 8: Add Skin Details and Patterns
Draw small scale textures across the body using tiny curved marks. Add the distinctive stripe pattern from neck to tail — a single pale stripe running the length of the animal along the mid-side. Add some spots or patches for extra visual interest.
Adding Colour
Start with a base coat of medium grey or olive green. Add a lighter grey-blue along the stripe from neck to tail. Darker patches on the back and top of the head. Orange-brown for the underside. Black for the eye pupil, nostril, and claw details.
Tips from Parikshet
- The stripe along the side is what makes Jurassic World raptors recognisable — add it clearly and cleanly.
- Colour the sickle claw a slightly different, more curved shade of grey to emphasise it as a separate weapon.
- Adding a light bounce of colour on the belly (lighter than the back) makes the raptor look three-dimensional even with simple colouring.
