A Halloween pumpkin (also called a jack-o-lantern) is one of the most fun things to draw in October. In this tutorial Parikshet shows you how to draw a spooky-but-friendly carved pumpkin with a glowing grin, curly stem and ridged sides — all from simple shapes.

🎨 What You Need

  • A4 white paper or black paper
  • Pencil and rubber
  • Black marker or fineliner
  • Orange, yellow and green crayons or colour pencils
  • Optional: white gel pen for highlights

How to Draw a Halloween Pumpkin Step by Step

  1. Step 1 — Draw a wide, slightly squashed oval in the middle of the page. This is the body of your pumpkin.
  2. Step 2 — Add two smaller curved ovals on either side of the main one, so the pumpkin looks plump and ridged.
  3. Step 3 — At the top centre, draw a short chunky stem with a slight curl, and a tiny leaf curling away from it.
  4. Step 4 — Lightly mark out two triangle eyes, a smaller triangle nose, and a wide zig-zag mouth with one or two pointy teeth.
  5. Step 5 — Go over the face shapes with a black marker and fill them in completely so they look like they are glowing from inside.
  6. Step 6 — Trace the pumpkin outline and the ridge lines with the black marker.
  7. Step 7 — Colour the pumpkin orange, going darker along the ridges and lighter in the middle of each section to make it look 3D.
  8. Step 8 — Colour the stem brown-green and add a few white dots near the eyes and mouth to show candlelight.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: Draw the mouth slightly off-centre and make one tooth bigger than the other — a wonky grin looks far spookier than a perfectly even one.
