How to Draw a Chair: Step-by-Step for Kids
A chair is a seat, a back and four legs. Drawing the seat as a slanted box makes it look three-dimensional.
What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White drawing paper
- Black marker for the outline
- Ruler (optional)
- Brown pencil
- Coloured pencils or crayons
Step-by-Step: Drawing a Chair
Step 1: Draw the seat
Draw a flat parallelogram, a rectangle leaning to one side. This is the top of the seat.
Step 2: Add the seat thickness
From the front corners, draw a short straight line down and join them with a line. The seat now looks like a thin box.
Step 3: Draw the front legs
From the two front corners, draw two straight legs going down.
Step 4: Add the back legs
Behind the seat, draw two shorter legs, starting a little higher up, because they are further away.
Step 5: Draw the backrest posts
From the back corners of the seat, draw two tall lines going up.
Step 6: Add the backrest bars
Draw two horizontal bars across the top and middle of the posts.
Step 7: Add a cushion
On the seat, draw a slightly smaller rounded square for a cushion.
Step 8: Outline and erase
Trace with a marker and erase the pencil.
Colouring Your Chair
Use brown for a wooden chair with darker lines to show wood grain. Colour the cushion in a bright colour like red or blue.
Tips for Drawing a Chair
- Parallel lines like the legs should go in the same direction. Check them against the edge of the page.
- Draw the back legs shorter than the front ones so the chair looks like it is in perspective.
