The frog is a wonderfully simple and cheerful animal to draw — a wide body, big bulging eyes on top of the head, and long folded legs ready to leap. It's a perfect beginner animal and a gateway to learning about amphibians. Parikshet shows you how to draw a happy frog step by step.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil and eraser
  • Green markers (light and dark)
  • White for the eyes and belly
  • Black pen for outlines
  • Pink for the mouth

How to Draw a Frog Step by Step

  1. Draw the body — a wide, rounded shape, broader than it is tall. Frogs have squat, wide bodies with no real neck.
  2. Add the two bulging eyes — on TOP of the head, draw two large domed circles for the eyes. Frog eyes bulge up high so the frog can see while sitting low in water.
  3. Add the pupils — a dark pupil and a white highlight in each eye for a lively look.
  4. Draw the wide smile — a big curved mouth stretching across the front of the body. Frogs have famously wide mouths.
  5. Add the nostrils — two small dots on top of the snout, near the eyes.
  6. Draw the front legs — two short front legs with little splayed toes, resting in front of the body.
  7. Draw the powerful back legs — the back legs are large and folded up in a zigzag (ready to jump), with long webbed toes.
  8. Colour — green body (darker on top, lighter belly), with spots if you like.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: The two key features that say 'frog' instantly are the bulging eyes ON TOP of the head and the wide, wide smile. Place the eyes high and domed, not on the sides, and stretch the mouth wide across the front. The big folded back legs also tell everyone this frog is ready to leap.

🌟 Did You Know?

Frogs are amphibians, which means they live both in water and on land. A frog begins life as a tadpole — a tiny swimming creature with a tail and no legs — and gradually grows legs, loses its tail, and transforms into a frog! Some frogs can leap over 20 times their own body length, and certain tree frogs can even change colour. Frogs also drink water through their skin rather than by mouth.

Frog Drawing Key Features

  • Bulging eyes on top — high and domed, not on the sides
  • Wide smile — a big mouth across the front of the body
  • Squat wide body — broad, with no real neck
  • Folded back legs — large and zigzagged, ready to leap

🎯 Try This: Draw the Frog Life Cycle

  1. Draw a clump of frogspawn (clear jelly with black dots).
  2. Draw a tadpole — a round head with a long swimming tail.
  3. Draw a tadpole growing legs but still with a tail.
  4. Draw the full frog. You've shown a complete metamorphosis!
