This version of the girl-in-moonlight sketch focuses on the butterfly more prominently — showing how to draw a detailed butterfly perched on an outstretched hand, with the moonlit girl as the backdrop. A great project for kids aged 10 and above.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil (HB and 2B)
  • Eraser
  • White drawing paper
  • Optional: blue coloured pencil for moonlight tones

How to Draw Girl with Butterfly in Moonlight (Version 2)

  1. Start with the hand — draw an open palm from the front view, fingers slightly spread, angled toward the viewer.
  2. Place the butterfly — centre it on the palm. Draw the body (a thin oval) first, then add four wings spreading outward.
  3. Detail the butterfly wings — add intricate patterns: veins, spots, eyespots. The more detail here, the more impressive the final piece.
  4. Sketch the girl behind — a softer, less detailed figure. Her face is partially in shadow; moonlight catches one cheek and her hair.
  5. Add the moon — place it behind her head, like a glowing halo.
  6. Shade the scene — foreground (hand and butterfly) is sharper and more detailed. Background (girl and moon) is softer and blended.
  7. Add depth — the hand appears closer to the viewer than the girl. Show this through size (hand is larger) and focus (hand is crisper).
💡 Parikshet's Tip: In art, what is in focus tells the story. If the butterfly is the star, make it the sharpest, most detailed element. Let the girl and moon be softer and slightly blurred — this draws the eye exactly where you want it.
