Pikachu is the most famous Pokémon in the world — and a wonderfully simple character to sketch. With its round body, pointed ears, red cheeks, and lightning-bolt tail, Pikachu is instantly recognisable from just a few shapes. Parikshet shows you how to sketch Pikachu step by step.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil and eraser
  • Yellow marker or crayon
  • Red for the cheeks
  • Black for the ear tips and eyes
  • Brown for the tail base

How to Draw a Pikachu Sketch Step by Step

  1. Draw the head and body — Pikachu's head and body are almost one rounded shape. Draw a large rounded form, slightly pear-shaped, wider at the bottom.
  2. Add the ears — two long, pointed ears rising from the top of the head. Each ear has a black tip at the end.
  3. Draw the face — two round black eyes with white highlight dots, a tiny nose, and a wide open smile. Pikachu's face is cheerful and simple.
  4. Add the red cheeks — two red circles on the cheeks, where Pikachu stores its electricity. These are essential — they are Pikachu's signature feature.
  5. Draw the arms and legs — short, small arms and stubby legs. Pikachu has a compact, rounded body.
  6. Draw the lightning-bolt tail — the famous zigzag lightning-shaped tail, wider at the tip. Add a brown patch at the base where it meets the body.
  7. Add the back stripes — two short brown stripes across the upper back.
  8. Colour — bright yellow body, red cheeks, black ear tips and eyes, brown tail base and stripes.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: Pikachu's red cheeks and lightning-bolt tail are the two features that make it unmistakable. Even a rough yellow blob reads as Pikachu the moment you add the red cheek circles and the zigzag tail. Get those two right above everything else.

🌟 Did You Know?

Pikachu's name combines two Japanese words: 'pika', the sound of an electric spark, and 'chu', the sound a mouse makes. Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon and the official mascot of the entire Pokémon franchise. It was not originally meant to be the star — that role was planned for Clefairy — but Pikachu's cute design made it so popular it became the face of Pokémon worldwide.

Pikachu's Signature Features

  • Red cheek circles — where it stores electricity; the #1 identifier
  • Lightning-bolt tail — zigzag shaped, wider at the tip
  • Black-tipped ears — long and pointed
  • Brown back stripes — two short stripes across the upper back

🎯 Try This: Draw Pikachu Using Its Electric Power

  1. Draw Pikachu in its attack pose — cheeks sparking, leaning forward.
  2. Add electric bolts radiating outward from its cheeks and body.
  3. Draw the tail raised high.
  4. Add a 'Pika-pika!' speech bubble and some energy crackle lines.
