How to Draw a Sunflower: Step-by-Step for Kids
A sunflower has a big round centre packed with seeds and a ring of long, pointed petals. Draw the middle first and build the petals around it.
What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White drawing paper
- Black marker for the outline
- Yellow, brown and green pencils
- Coloured pencils or crayons
Step-by-Step: Drawing a Sunflower
Step 1: Draw the centre
Draw a medium-sized circle. This is the seed head, the middle of the flower.
Step 2: Add the seed pattern
Fill the circle with small crisscross lines to make tiny diamond shapes, like a net.
Step 3: Draw the first petals
Around the centre draw four petals: one at the top, bottom, left and right. Each is a long pointed oval.
Step 4: Fill in the petals
Add more petals in the gaps until the circle is fully surrounded. Overlap them slightly.
Step 5: Add a second ring
Draw a second ring of petals behind the first, tucked between them, so the flower looks full.
Step 6: Draw the stem
From the bottom of the flower, draw two long parallel lines that curve slightly.
Step 7: Add the leaves
On each side of the stem, draw a large heart-shaped leaf with a line down the middle for the vein.
Step 8: Outline and erase
Trace with a marker and erase the pencil.
Colouring Your Sunflower
Colour the petals sunny yellow with orange at the base. Use dark brown in the centre, with a lighter brown ring on the outside. The stem and leaves are green, with darker green in the veins.
Tips for Drawing a Sunflower
- Draw the petals like a clock. Start at 12, 3, 6 and 9, then fill in between.
- Make the petals different sizes. Perfectly equal petals look stiff.
