How to Draw a Cupcake: Step-by-Step for Kids
A cupcake has a paper wrapper, a bumpy cake top and a swirl of frosting. Stack the frosting from big to small and it looks tall and delicious.
What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White drawing paper
- Black marker for the outline
- Pink, brown and red colours
- Coloured pencils or crayons
Step-by-Step: Drawing a Cupcake
Step 1: Draw the wrapper
Draw a trapezoid that is wide at the top and narrower at the bottom.
Step 2: Add the pleats
Draw straight lines from the top edge down to the bottom to make pleats, spaced evenly across the wrapper.
Step 3: Draw the cake top
On the wrapper's top edge, draw a wide bumpy dome so the cake rises slightly above the rim.
Step 4: Add the first frosting layer
On top of the cake, draw a wide flat oval with a wavy bottom edge.
Step 5: Add the second and third layers
Draw a smaller oval on top of the first, then a smaller one again. Each layer should be narrower than the one below.
Step 6: Draw the swirl tip
At the very top, draw a small curved point like a curl.
Step 7: Add a cherry and sprinkles
Place a cherry at the top and scatter small dashes over the frosting.
Step 8: Outline and erase
Trace with a marker and erase your guide lines.
Colouring Your Cupcake
Use a bright pastel pink or a chocolate brown for the frosting. The wrapper can be striped in two colours. Add a dark red cherry and multicoloured sprinkles.
Tips for Drawing a Cupcake
- Each frosting layer must be smaller than the one below it. That is what makes it a swirl.
- Draw the pleats slightly curved at the top to match the round rim.
