💡 Perfect if you're thinking...
A basketball hoop is a fun sports object to draw — the backboard, the orange rim, and the net make a clear, satisfying subject. It pairs perfectly with a basketball drawing for a complete sports scene. Parikshet shows you how to draw a basketball hoop step by step.
🖍️ What You Need
- Pencil and eraser
- Ruler (for the backboard)
- Orange marker for the rim
- White and grey for the net and backboard
- Black pen for outlines
How to Draw a Basketball Hoop Step by Step
- Draw the backboard — using a ruler, draw a rectangle for the backboard. It's slightly wider than it is tall.
- Add the inner square — draw a smaller rectangle (the shooter's square) in the centre-bottom of the backboard. Players aim the ball at this square for bank shots.
- Draw the rim — below the backboard, draw the orange rim as a flattened oval (an ellipse), because we see it at a slight angle. The rim attaches to the backboard with a small bracket.
- Add the net — from the rim, draw the hanging net: a series of crisscrossing diagonal lines forming a mesh that narrows toward the bottom, with a slightly flared, open bottom.
- Show the net's shape — the net hangs in a cone shape, wider at the top (the rim) and narrowing as it goes down. Add the diamond mesh pattern.
- Add the support pole (optional) — a pole behind the backboard if it's a freestanding hoop, or brackets if it's wall-mounted.
- Add a ball (optional) — draw a basketball going through or sitting in the hoop for action.
- Colour — orange rim, white net, grey or clear backboard with black lines.
🌟 Did You Know?
A regulation basketball hoop is exactly 10 feet (about 3 metres) above the ground — a height set by the game's inventor, Dr James Naismith, in 1891, simply because the running track railing in his gym happened to be at that height! The rim is 18 inches across, and a basketball is about 9.5 inches across — so two basketballs side by side would just barely fit through the hoop.
Parts of a Basketball Hoop
- Backboard — the rectangle behind, with the shooter's square
- Rim — the orange ring, drawn as an ellipse for 3D
- Net — the hanging mesh that narrows downward
- Support — a pole or wall brackets holding it up
🎯 Try This: Draw a Slam Dunk Scene

- Add a player leaping up to dunk the ball through the rim.
- Show the net swishing and the ball going in.
- Add motion lines and a crowd in the background for excitement.
