The daffodil is one of the cheeriest flowers of spring — bright yellow with a trumpet-shaped centre surrounded by star-like petals. It's a lovely, simple flower to draw and a true sign that spring has arrived. Parikshet shows you how to draw a daffodil step by step.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil and eraser
  • Yellow and orange markers
  • Green for the stem and leaves
  • Black pen for outlines

How to Draw a Daffodil Step by Step

  1. Draw the trumpet centre — start with the daffodil's distinctive trumpet (corona): a small cup or bell shape in the middle, often a deeper orange-yellow.
  2. Add the frilly trumpet edge — give the rim of the trumpet a wavy, frilly edge.
  3. Draw the petals — six pointed petals radiating out behind the trumpet, like a star. Space them evenly around the centre.
  4. Shape the petals — each petal is a rounded point, slightly overlapping its neighbours at the base.
  5. Draw the stem — a long, straight green stem coming down from the flower.
  6. Add the leaves — long, thin, blade-like leaves rising from the base of the stem (daffodil leaves are narrow and strappy).
  7. Add a paper sheath (optional) — a small papery brown sheath where the flower meets the stem.
  8. Colour — bright yellow petals, a deeper orange-yellow trumpet, green stem and leaves.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: The trumpet in the centre is what makes a daffodil a daffodil — draw the cup-shaped trumpet first, with a frilly rim, then add the six star-like petals behind it. The trumpet is usually a slightly deeper orange than the pale yellow petals, which makes it stand out.

🌟 Did You Know?

Daffodils are among the first flowers to bloom in spring, often pushing up through the last of the winter snow — which is why they symbolise hope and new beginnings. They grow from bulbs that store energy underground all winter. Daffodils are also the national flower of Wales, where they are worn on St David's Day, the 1st of March.

Daffodil Drawing Key Parts

  • The trumpet (corona) — the cup-shaped centre with a frilly rim
  • Six star petals — radiating out behind the trumpet
  • Strappy leaves — long, thin, blade-like green leaves
  • Two-tone yellow — pale petals, deeper trumpet

🎯 Try This: Draw a Spring Flower Bunch
