💡 Perfect if you're thinking...
A sailing boat gliding across the sea is one of the most relaxing things to draw, and it’s easier than it looks. The whole picture is really just a curved hull, a straight mast and a couple of triangle sails catching the wind.
🖍️ What You Need
- Pencil and eraser
- Black pen for outlines
- Blue marker for the sea and sky
- Red and white for the sails
How to Draw a Sail Boat for Kids
- Draw the hull — a long, shallow curve like a wide smile for the boat’s body.
- Close the top — a straight line across the top of the hull for the deck.
- Add the mast — a tall straight line rising from the centre of the deck.
- Draw the main sail — a large triangle filling the space on one side of the mast.
- Add the jib — a smaller triangle on the front side of the mast.
- Add a flag — a tiny triangle at the very top of the mast.
- Draw the sea — a few gentle wavy lines beneath the hull.
- Outline and colour — ink the lines, colour the sails and paint the sea blue.
🌟 Did You Know?
Sailors steer a sailing boat partly by changing the angle of the sails. By turning the sail to catch the wind differently, they can even travel in a zig-zag against the wind — this is called tacking.
Make Your Boat Scene Come Alive
- Add a sun — a bright circle with little rays.
- Draw seagulls — simple ‘m’ shapes in the sky.
- Add waves — layered curves give a sense of movement.
- Include an island — a small hill with a palm tree in the distance.
🎯 Try This: a stormy sea version
- Draw your boat tilting on a big wave.
- Add dark, jagged clouds above.
- Draw the sails bending in strong wind.
- Use a zig-zag line for a flash of lightning.

What is the easiest way to draw a sail boat?
Start with the curved hull, add a straight mast, then hang two triangle sails from it. Those three shapes — curve, line and triangles — make a complete boat.
What is tacking?
Tacking is when sailors zig-zag the boat into the wind by changing the angle of the sails. It lets a boat travel towards the wind, not just away from it.
How do I make the sails look full of wind?
Curve them gently and tilt them in the same direction, as if the wind is pushing from one side. Straight, flat sails look like the boat is standing still.
How can I make the sea look real?
Use layered wavy lines rather than one flat line, and colour the water in two shades of blue. A few white gaps look like foam on the waves.
