Sonic the Hedgehog and his rival Shadow are two of gaming's most iconic characters — both built from the same spiky silhouette but with completely different colour schemes and attitudes. Sonic is the cheerful blue speedster; Shadow is the brooding black-and-red anti-hero. Parikshet shows you how to draw both, side by side.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil and eraser
  • Blue marker for Sonic, black for Shadow
  • Red and white for shoes and Shadow's stripes
  • Peach/tan for the muzzle and arms
  • Black fine-tip pen for outlines

How to Draw Sonic and Shadow Step by Step

  1. Draw Sonic's head — a circle for the head, then add the iconic backward-pointing quills: 6 spikes sweeping back from the top and sides of the head.
  2. Add Sonic's face — two large connected eyes (a single oval shape divided into two, with green irises), a small triangular nose, and a confident smirk. Add the tan muzzle around the mouth.
  3. Draw Sonic's body — a small rounded torso. Add two more quills pointing back from the lower body, and a short tail.
  4. Add Sonic's arms, legs, and shoes — slim arms with white-gloved hands, short legs, and the famous red-and-white sneakers with a buckle strap.
  5. Draw Shadow beside him — same basic spiky shape, but Shadow's quills curve upward at the tips (not straight back like Sonic's). Same head and body construction.
  6. Add Shadow's distinguishing marks — red stripes along each quill and on the arms and legs. Red eyes instead of green. A patch of white chest fur.
  7. Finish Shadow's shoes — Shadow wears hover skates: black, red, and white with a distinctive jet-style design instead of Sonic's classic sneakers.
  8. Colour both — Sonic bright blue with green eyes; Shadow black with red stripes and red eyes. The contrast tells their whole story.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: The quills are how you tell Sonic and Shadow apart instantly: Sonic's quills point straight back in a smooth sweep, while Shadow's quills curve and angle UPWARD at the tips. Get the quill direction right and the rest of the colouring does the work.

🌟 Did You Know?

Sonic was created by SEGA in 1991 specifically to compete with Nintendo's Mario. The design brief was a character who could move fast and had 'attitude' — the blue colour was chosen to match SEGA's logo. Shadow was introduced 10 years later in Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) as Sonic's dark counterpart, created as the 'Ultimate Life Form' in the game's story.

The Sonic Character Family

  • Sonic — blue, green eyes, straight-back quills, red sneakers. The hero.
  • Shadow — black, red eyes, upward quills, red stripes, hover skates. The rival.
  • Tails — orange-yellow fox with two tails that spin like a helicopter.
  • Knuckles — red echidna with spiked fists and a more muscular build.

🎯 Try This: Draw a Sonic Speed Scene

  1. Draw Sonic mid-run, leaning forward with legs blurred into a figure-8 (his classic running animation).
  2. Add speed lines and a dust trail behind him.
  3. Draw rings (gold circles) floating in his path.
  4. Add a loop-the-loop track in the background — a Sonic level signature.
