The AI Adventures course is designed for a specific child β and it's worth understanding exactly who that is before enrolling. Here's the honest readiness guide.
The ideal student
The course is designed for children aged 9-12. Here's why this age window matters:
- Under 9: The conceptual leaps (AI learns from data; AI can be wrong; AI raises ethical questions) require abstract thinking that most children under 9 are still developing. The content can be adapted for 8-year-olds with parental involvement, but 9 is the natural floor.
- 9-12: The sweet spot. Old enough to engage with abstract concepts, young enough that AI literacy is forming before habits do. Most school subjects haven't yet covered AI properly, so this is genuinely new territory.
- 13+: The course will still be valuable, but older teens may find some early content straightforward. The AI Adventures "Level 2: Builder" course (in development) will cover AI programming for this age group.
What your child needs before starting
The prerequisites are deliberately minimal:
- β Can read and type in English (basic level β the course is designed for age 9+)
- β Has access to a computer or tablet with internet
- β Has a parent who can help set up any required accounts
- β Is curious about technology (even if they know nothing about AI)
- β Does NOT need to know how to code
- β Does NOT need prior AI knowledge
- β Does NOT need strong maths skills
Week by week: what to expect
- Week 1 (Mission 1): What is AI? Where is it hiding in your life? The AI Family Tree. Project: My AI World Map.
- Week 2 (Mission 2): Talking to AI. The SUPER Prompt Formula. Advanced prompt techniques. Project: Prompt Portfolio.
- Week 3 (Mission 3): AI Art Studio β how AI makes art, using AI tools for creativity, AI stories. Project: My AI Masterpiece.
- Week 4 (Mission 4): AI for school β study buddy, project planning, AI toolbox. Project: AI Solved My Problem.
- Week 5 (Mission 5): AI Ethics β when AI gets it wrong, AI bias, AI safety. Project: My AI Rulebook.
- Week 6 (Mission 6): The future β AI careers, capstone project, Demo Day. Certificate earned.
What children can do after completing
By the end of 6 weeks, a child who has completed AI Adventures can:
- Explain what AI is and how it works to friends, teachers, and family
- Recognise AI in the apps and devices around them
- Write effective prompts to get genuinely useful results from AI tools
- Create original AI art and stories
- Use AI as a study tool β appropriately and ethically
- Identify when AI is wrong and know how to fact-check
- Articulate why AI bias matters and how to think critically about AI fairness
- Point to a capstone project they built and can explain and demonstrate
How parents can support the learning
The course includes a parent guide with weekly "conversation starters" β questions you can ask your child to reinforce what they learned, even if you don't know anything about AI yourself. Examples: "What AI did you find in our house this week?" "What's the best prompt you wrote today?" "What was the AI wrong about?"
The most effective parents don't need to know the content β they just need to be curious and ask questions. Children who can explain what they've learned to a parent retain it significantly better than those who don't.
