How to Draw a Cobra — Easy Step-by-Step for Kids
Cobras are the most dramatic snakes in the world — that raised hood is amazing to draw! Follow Parikshet's steps to draw a rearing cobra.
What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White paper
- Black marker
- Brown, yellow, and black coloured pencils
Step-by-Step: Drawing a Cobra
Step 1: Draw the Coiled Body Base
At the bottom of your page, draw a flat oval coil shape — like a thick rope coiled in a circle. This is the cobra's base coiled on the ground.
Step 2: Draw the Raised Neck
From the top of the coil, draw two curved parallel lines going upward — slightly narrowing as they rise. This is the cobra's raised neck, curving gently at the top.
Step 3: Draw the Hood
At the top of the neck, flare the two lines dramatically outward on both sides — the hood! The hood is wide and flat, like an umbrella spreading at the sides of the head. The outer edge curves in a wide oval arc.
Step 4: Draw the Head
Inside the hood at the very top, draw the cobra's small triangular head — surprisingly small compared to the hood. A flattened triangle shape with a rounded snout.
Step 5: Add the Face
Draw a small round eye with a slit pupil (a thin vertical oval inside). Add two small nostril dots on the snout. Draw a forked tongue flickering out — two thin pointed prongs.
Step 6: Add Hood Spectacle Markings
On the inside of the spread hood, draw two large eye-like circles joined together — cobras have famous spectacle markings on the back of their hood.
Step 7: Add Scale Pattern
Draw small curved U-shapes across the neck and body to show scales. Work in rows — each row of U-shapes overlaps the row above like roof tiles.
Step 8: Outline and Colour
Outline in black marker. Colour the body brown or olive green. Hood interior pale yellow. Spectacle markings dark brown outlined in pale cream. Tongue bright red.
Colouring Tips
Indian cobras are typically brown or olive with paler undersides. Make the inside of the hood lighter than the outside, and keep the spectacle markings in a contrasting pale colour.
Parikshet's Tips
- The hood is the star of the drawing — make it wide and dramatic!
- The forked tongue completes the cobra look — two sharp prongs pointing forward.
- Practice every day and you'll get better!
