AI is one of the most powerful tools humans have ever created. Like all powerful tools — from cars to the internet — it comes with responsibility. Here are 5 rules every young AI user should know.

Rule 1: Be Honest About AI Use

When you create something with AI help, say so. "I used ChatGPT to help me draft this, then rewrote it in my own words" is honest. "I wrote this myself" when AI wrote it is dishonest — even if no one finds out immediately.

Why it matters: Trust, once broken, is hard to rebuild. And being honest about AI actually makes you stand out positively — it shows you understand how to use tools professionally.

Rule 2: Check AI Facts Before Sharing

AI makes things up. This is called "hallucination" and it happens regularly — AI states false information with total confidence. Never share an AI answer as a fact without checking it against a reliable source first.

Quick check: If AI tells you a statistic or historical fact, search for it in a textbook or trusted website. If you cannot verify it, do not share it as truth.

Rule 3: Do Not Use AI to Be Mean

AI can write convincing fake messages, create fake images and generate believable stories. Using these abilities to bully, trick or embarrass other people is not just unkind — it can cause real harm and may break laws around the world.

Rule 4: Protect Your Privacy and Others

Do not share personal information with AI chatbots. And do not share other people's information either — their names, photos or private details — without their knowledge and permission.

Rule 5: Use AI to Learn, Not to Avoid Learning

The students who succeed in the age of AI are not the ones who get AI to do everything for them. They are the ones who use AI to learn faster and deeper — and who develop skills AI cannot replace: creativity, judgment, empathy and leadership.

The Responsible AI User's Pledge:
"I will be honest about when I use AI. I will check AI facts before sharing them. I will never use AI to harm anyone. I will use AI to learn — not to avoid learning."

Talk with Your Family

Make AI use a family conversation. Share what tools you are using, what you learned from them, and what surprised you. Families who talk openly about AI together develop better judgment than those who treat it as a secret activity.
