The Story

It was Christmas Eve, and Parikshet had a plan. This year, he was going to stay awake and meet Santa for real. He hid behind the sofa with a torch and a biscuit.

Ten o'clock. The house grew quiet. Mum tucked him into bed twice, but each time he sneaked back to his hiding spot. The Christmas tree lights twinkled in the dark.

Eleven o'clock. He yawned. His eyelids felt heavy, but he forced them open. "Stay awake," he whispered. "Stay awake. Stay awake."

Midnight came. He thought he heard a tiny jingle. He sat up sharply, but the room was still. Just the tree, the cookies on the plate, and a glass of milk for Santa.

Then, slowly, his eyes closed. When he woke up, the sun was up too. Under the tree sat a pile of presents — and the cookie plate was empty.
