How to Draw Superman Cartoon: Step-by-Step for Kids

Grab your pencil and let's draw together with Parikshet — Superman in classic cartoon style, the Man of Steel!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil (HB or 2B)
  • Eraser
  • White paper
  • Black marker
  • Coloured pencils or crayons (blue, red, yellow, skin tone, black)

Step-by-Step: Drawing Superman Cartoon

Step 1: Draw the Head

Near the top of your paper, draw a slightly squared-off oval for Superman's head — he has a strong, heroic jaw. Make the jaw slightly wider and more angular than a typical round head.

Step 2: Add Superman's Hair and Face

At the top of the head, draw Superman's iconic hair — dark and swept to the side, with a distinctive small curl (the "spit curl") falling onto the forehead just above the right eye. Add two confident eyes, a strong straight nose, and a determined smile.

Step 3: Draw the Powerful Body

Superman has a very muscular, heroic build. Draw a wide, V-shaped torso — broad at the shoulders, narrowing slightly at the waist. Make the chest area very large and prominent. Draw the neck as a short, thick column.

Step 4: Add the Superman Symbol

In the centre of the chest, draw the iconic Superman 'S' shield. Start with a pentagon shape (like a home plate in baseball). Inside it, draw a smaller pentagon. Inside that, draw the stylised 'S' shape. This is Superman's most recognisable detail.

Step 5: Draw the Cape

Behind Superman's shoulders, draw a flowing red cape. The cape billows out to one side — draw curved, flowing lines suggesting the fabric moving in the wind. The cape attaches at the shoulders and flows down behind the body.

Step 6: Draw Arms in Action Pose

Draw one arm raised and bent at the elbow (fist up, ready to punch) and the other arm hanging at the side in a fist. Superman's arms are muscular — the upper arms should be wider than the forearms.

Step 7: Draw Legs and Boots

Below the torso, draw two powerful legs in blue tights. At the feet, draw Superman's classic red knee-high boots — they have a sharp angular top edge. Add a yellow belt at the waist.

Colouring Superman

The suit is bright blue. The cape, boots, and 'S' shield border are red. The 'S' itself is yellow on a red background. The belt is yellow. The skin is a warm tone. The hair is black with a blue shine highlight.

  • Superman's wide, powerful shoulders and chest are what makes him look heroic — don't make the body too slim.
  • The 'S' shield takes practice — draw it large and take your time with the curves of the S inside.
