What You'll Need

Step-by-Step: Drawing a Watermelon Slice (June Favourite)

Step 1: Draw a Half-Circle

Start with a large half-circle in the centre of your paper — the flat edge at the bottom, the curved edge at the top. This is the outer rind of your watermelon slice.

Step 2: Add the Rind Layer

Inside the half-circle, draw a slightly smaller half-circle parallel to the outer edge. The gap between the two curves represents the thick green and white rind of the watermelon.

Step 3: Draw the Pink Flesh

The inside area (within the inner half-circle) is the red-pink flesh of the watermelon. This is the biggest, most colourful area of the drawing.

Step 4: Add the Seeds

Scatter 8 to 12 small oval seed shapes randomly across the pink flesh area. Real watermelon seeds are teardrop-shaped — make them slightly pointed at one end. This is a detail that immediately says "watermelon."

Step 5: Add the Rind Colours

Divide the rind layer into two parts — the outer thin strip is dark green, the inner slightly wider strip is white or very light green. Real watermelon rind has this distinctive two-tone layer.

Step 6: Draw a Bite Taken Out (Optional Fun Detail)

For extra fun, draw a curved "bite" shape cut out from one side of the watermelon slice — a curved notch with an irregular edge as if someone took a big bite. Add a small curved line inside the bite area showing the flesh continues inward.

Step 7: Outline and Finalize

Trace all lines boldly with a black marker. Make the outer rind the boldest line. Erase pencil marks.

Colouring Your Watermelon

The flesh is bright red or pink — use circular strokes to fill it evenly. The seeds are black with a small white highlight dot. The inner rind strip is white. The outer rind is dark green with light green vertical stripes.

Parikshet's Tips

  • The seeds are essential — without them it could be any round fruit. Add plenty of them scattered across the flesh.
  • The two-colour rind (dark green outside, white inside) is an easy detail that makes the drawing look very realistic.
  • Practice makes perfect!
