How to Draw 3D Trick Art — Cube and Staircase: Step-by-Step for Kids

Grab your pencil and let's draw together with Parikshet — amazing 3D trick art that looks like it jumps off the page!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil (HB or 2B)
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • White paper
  • Black marker
  • Pencil shading (no colour needed — just pencil gradients work best for 3D effects)

Step-by-Step: Drawing a 3D Impossible Staircase

Step 1: Draw the First Step — Top Left

Using your ruler, draw the top step: a horizontal line about 4 cm long, then a vertical line going down about 2 cm, then a horizontal line going right about 4 cm. You've drawn the first "L" step shape.

Step 2: Draw the Second Step Below

From the end of the first step, draw another L-shape — 4 cm right, 2 cm down, 4 cm right. This second step sits below and to the right of the first.

Step 3: Add Three More Steps

Continue the pattern, adding three more steps below — each one shifted down 2 cm and to the right. You now have a staircase descending from upper-left to lower-right. You should have 5 steps total.

Step 4: Add the 3D Depth Lines

This is where the trick art magic happens. From each horizontal step edge, draw a diagonal line going back into the picture at a 30-degree angle (upper-right direction). Make all these diagonal lines the same length and parallel to each other.

Step 5: Connect the Depth Lines

Connect the ends of the diagonal depth lines with vertical lines (for the back edges of each step) and horizontal lines (for the tops of the step platforms going back). Follow the staircase shape into the distance.

Step 6: Shade to Create the Illusion

Now shade each face of the staircase differently. The top horizontal surfaces: leave light (almost white). The front vertical faces: shade medium grey. The sides going back: shade dark grey. The three different shades are what creates the powerful 3D illusion.

Step 7: Add Cast Shadow

Below and to the right of the staircase, draw a diagonal shadow shape on the "ground" — shade it very dark grey. A cast shadow anchors the 3D object to the surface and dramatically increases the illusion.

Tips for Better 3D Trick Art

The three keys to convincing 3D trick art are: 1) All parallel lines must be truly parallel — use a ruler. 2) Three different tones for three faces. 3) A cast shadow. Get these three things right and any geometric shape becomes convincingly 3D.
