Step-by-Step: Drawing a 3D Letter T

Step 1: Draw the Flat Letter T

In the centre of your paper, use a ruler to draw a large, flat letter T. The top bar of the T should be about 10 cm wide and 2.5 cm tall. The vertical stem of the T should be about 4 cm wide and 8 cm tall. Use clean, straight ruler lines for every edge.

Step 2: Mark the Vanishing Point

Choose a vanishing point to the upper-right of your letter T — about 6 cm to the right and 4 cm above the top of the letter. Mark this point lightly with a dot. All your 3D depth lines will go to this point.

Step 3: Draw Depth Lines from Each Corner

From every corner and outer edge point of the letter T, draw a light line going toward the vanishing point. These are your guide lines for the 3D depth. Draw from: all four corners of the top bar, and the two top corners of the stem, and the two bottom corners of the stem.

Step 4: Draw the Back Edges

Along each depth line, mark a consistent depth — about 1.5 to 2 cm from the front face. Draw lines connecting these back-edge points. This creates the back face of the 3D letter. Erase the depth lines that would be inside the letter (hidden parts).

Step 5: Identify the Three Visible Faces

Your 3D letter T now has three visible faces: the front face (the flat T you drew in Step 1), the top face (the horizontal surfaces of the letter), and the right side face (the side edges going to the vanishing point).

Step 6: Shade the Three Faces

Front face: leave white (light source hits it). Top face: shade lightly in medium grey. Side face (right side): shade in dark grey or charcoal. The three different shades create the powerful 3D effect.

Step 7: Add a Cast Shadow

Below the letter, draw a shadow shape on the "ground." The shadow mirrors the letter T shape but is stretched diagonally toward the lower-right. Fill it with very dark pencil pressure, then blend with your fingertip.

Colouring Your 3D Letter T

For extra impact, colour the front face of the T in a bright colour — red, blue, or green. Keep the top face lighter and the side face darker. The cast shadow stays grey-black.
