What Is Prompt Engineering? (And Why Dubai Wants 1 Million People to Learn It)

I'm Parikshet. I completed the Dubai One Million Prompters certification in 2025. It is free, takes about four hours, and I genuinely learned things that changed how I use AI every day. Here is what prompt engineering is and why the UAE government thinks it is important enough to train one million people in it.

What Is a Prompt?

A prompt is everything you type into an AI system — the instruction, question, or context you provide. The quality of what you get back depends almost entirely on the quality of what you put in. "Write me an essay" and "Write a 400-word persuasive essay arguing that schools should teach AI as a core subject, aimed at parents who are sceptical of new technology, in a friendly and evidence-based tone" will produce completely different results from the same AI model.

Prompt engineering is the skill of crafting that second kind of prompt — specific, contextual, formatted, and result-oriented.

The SUPER Prompt Formula

I have used this framework since I was 9 and it still works:

S — Specific. Replace vague with precise. "Write a story" → "Write a 200-word adventure story for a 9-year-old about a girl who discovers a hidden library."

U — Unique (your situation). Give context. "I am an 11-year-old preparing a 3-minute school presentation for 30 classmates" changes the AI's calibration completely.

P — Precise format. Specify structure. Bullet list? Numbered steps? Table? Dialogue? Specify — do not leave it to chance.

E — Example-based. Show, do not just tell. "Write a quiz question like this example: [paste your example]" consistently outperforms "write me a quiz question about X."

R — Result-focused. Define success. "Simple enough for my 8-year-old brother to understand" or "under 100 words" anchors the AI to what you actually need.

Why Dubai Is Training 1 Million People in This

The Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence launched One Million Prompters in January 2025 — a free, four-module online course targeting one million certifications over three years. I completed it. The modules cover: what AI tools are, how to write effective prompts, how to apply them for real tasks, and how to use AI responsibly.

The reasoning behind the programme is strategic. The UAE has committed billions to AI infrastructure. That infrastructure is useless if the population does not know how to use it effectively. Prompt engineering is the user interface between humans and AI — teaching it at scale is the equivalent of a country teaching its population to use the internet.

Practical Prompt Examples to Try

For school research:
"I am an 11-year-old writing a 500-word report on climate change for my Year 6 science class. Give me five key facts with brief explanations, at a reading level appropriate for my age. Format as a numbered list."

For creative writing:
"Help me start a short story. The setting is a future Dubai in 2075 where half the city floats above the clouds. The main character is a 12-year-old girl who maintains the hover engines. Write just the opening paragraph — around 80 words — with a hook that makes the reader want to continue."

For explaining concepts:
"Explain how vaccines work to a 10-year-old who understands what a cold is but has not studied biology. Use a simple analogy. Maximum 150 words."

Notice the pattern in each: specific task, your situation, precise format, result defined. Apply SUPER to every important prompt you write and the improvement will be immediate.
