Science projects are one of the best places for kids to use AI — as a research assistant, explainer and thinking partner. Here is exactly how to do it well.

Stage 1: Generating Ideas (Before You Start)

Stuck on what to investigate? Use this prompt with ChatGPT or Gemini:

"I am in Year 6 and need a science fair project idea. I am interested in [your interests]. The project must be done at home with simple materials. Give me 5 testable questions I could investigate."

Then pick the one that excites you most — not the one that sounds impressive. Enthusiasm shows in presentations.

Stage 2: Understanding the Science (Research Phase)

For every concept you do not understand, ask AI to explain it simply. For example:

  • "Explain osmosis to me like I am 11 years old."
  • "Why does salt make ice melt faster? Keep it simple."
  • "What is the difference between an independent and dependent variable?"

For finding sources, use Perplexity AI (perplexity.ai) — it gives answers with cited sources so you can check and reference them properly.

Stage 3: Writing the Report (After Your Experiment)

Do NOT ask AI to write your report. Instead, use these targeted prompts:

  • Conclusion help: "My experiment tested [X]. My results showed [Y]. What might explain this? Give me 3 possible reasons I could investigate."
  • Errors section: "What are common sources of error in experiments that test [your topic]?"
  • Future research: "What follow-up questions could I explore next based on this project about [topic]?"

How to Cite AI in Your Project

Many schools now accept AI as a source if cited correctly. Use this format:
ChatGPT (OpenAI, 2025). Response to prompt: "Explain osmosis for an 11-year-old." Generated on 15 January 2026.

Always check with your teacher first about their school policy.

Use AI to improve your science project hypothesis

  1. Write your current hypothesis in one sentence (e.g., 'Plants grow faster with more water').
  2. Ask an AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity): 'How could I make this hypothesis more specific and testable?'
  3. Read the suggestions and rewrite your hypothesis using your own words.
  4. Notice how the improved hypothesis makes your experiment easier to design — that's AI as a thinking partner, not a cheat tool.
