How to Draw an Astronaut: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids

Ever dreamed of going to space? Drawing an astronaut is the first step! Follow Parikshet's easy guide and create your own space explorer ready for a moon mission.

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • White, grey, gold, and flag-colour markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Helmet

Start with a large circle near the top of your paper. This is the astronaut's helmet — make it big and round, like a fishbowl on their head.

Step 2: Add the Visor

Inside the helmet circle, draw a curved D-shape for the gold or silver visor. The flat side of the D faces the left. Shade it gold or leave it as an outline for now.

Step 3: Draw the Torso

Below the helmet, draw a wide rectangle for the spacesuit torso. It should be slightly narrower than the helmet and have rounded edges — the suit is puffy and thick.

Step 4: Add the Life Support Backpack

Draw a smaller rectangle on the chest of the suit for the life support pack. Add a few small circles and rectangles on it to show buttons and gauges.

Step 5: Draw the Arms

On each side of the torso, draw thick, puffy arms with several rounded bulge lines to show the pressurized suit segments. End each arm in a large round glove.

Step 6: Draw the Legs

Below the torso, draw two thick legs with the same puffy segment lines. Add large rectangular boots at the bottom — astronaut boots are very chunky and heavy.

Step 7: Add the Flag and Badge

Draw a small rectangular flag patch on the upper arm. Add a round mission badge on the chest. These details make the astronaut look official!

Step 8: Draw Helmet Details

Add a thin antenna or light on top of the helmet. Draw two small reflection highlight lines on the visor. Add a neck ring where the helmet meets the suit body.

Adding Colour

Colour the whole suit bright white. Fill the visor with gold or a dark reflective colour. Add your country's flag colours on the arm patch. Use light grey for the shadow areas on the suit to show it is rounded and puffy.

Tips from Parikshet

  • The suit should look round and puffy everywhere — astronauts wear pressurized suits that are very thick!
  • Add a few curved shadow lines on the white suit to make it look three-dimensional.
  • Imagine you are designing the suit for YOUR moon mission — add your own patches and badge design!
