How to Draw a Scary Cute Black Cat: Step-by-Step for Kids

A black cat with wide eyes and an arched back is the perfect Halloween symbol — but make it cute and it becomes everyone's favourite! Here is how to draw the perfect scary-cute black cat.

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Black, yellow, and white markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Round Head

Draw a circle for the cat's head. Black cats have a sleek look, so the head can be slightly oval — not too wide. Leave space below for the arched body.

Step 2: Add the Tall Pointy Ears

At the top corners of the head, draw two tall, sharply pointed ears. Scared cats have very erect, alert ears. Add small inner ear triangles in a slightly different shade.

Step 3: Draw the Wide Scary-Cute Eyes

In the upper half of the face, draw two large round eyes — wide open with surprise or fright. Add large oval pupils that take up most of the iris. Cats have vertical slit pupils, but round pupils look more adorable. Add white crescent highlights at the top of each eye.

Step 4: Add the Nose and Mouth

Draw a tiny triangle nose in the centre of the face. Below it, draw a small W-shape or Y-shape mouth with tiny fangs visible at the corners. Cute fangs are what make this cat both spooky and adorable.

Step 5: Draw the Arched Body

Below the head, draw the cat's body in the classic Halloween arched-back position — a curved arch like an upside-down U. The back is highly arched and the belly hangs low.

Step 6: Draw the Puffed Up Tail

From the rear of the body, draw a tail that curls upward and then arches over — the tail is puffed up and bushy when a cat is scared. Make it thick and fluffy.

Step 7: Draw the Four Legs

Add four legs below the body. In the arched position, the legs are stiff and straight. The front legs lean forward, the back legs push from behind. Add small paws with tiny claw marks on each.

Step 8: Add Whiskers and Final Details

Draw three long whisker lines extending from each side of the face. Add small Halloween details around the cat — stars, a crescent moon, or small bats in the background.

Adding Colour

Fill the entire cat with solid black. Add yellow or green for the eye irises (cat eyes glow in the dark!). White for the highlight reflections in the eyes and on the fangs. A simple orange or purple background makes the black cat pop dramatically.
