Colour Splash is a science-meets-art experiment where drops of food colouring spread, swirl, and explode across milk or water — and you control the chaos. It looks magical but it's really chemistry: surface tension breaking apart.

🎨 What You Need

  • A shallow dish or dinner plate
  • Whole milk (full-fat works best)
  • Liquid food colouring — 4 colours
  • Washing-up liquid
  • Cotton earbuds

How to Do the Colour Splash Experiment

  1. Pour the milk — fill the plate with just enough milk to cover the bottom, about 5mm deep.
  2. Wait for stillness — let the milk settle for 30 seconds so the surface is flat.
  3. Add the colours — drop one drop of each food colour near the centre, close together but not touching.
  4. Dip the bud — touch one end of a cotton earbud into washing-up liquid (just a tiny bit).
  5. Touch the milk — gently press the soapy bud into the middle of the colour drops. Don't stir.
  6. Watch the explosion — colours will race outwards in swirls and feathers.
  7. Try again — touch a clean spot to see fresh swirls; the reaction keeps going for a minute.
  8. Photograph — the patterns never repeat, so snap pictures as your art happens.
