How to Draw a Cute Unicorn: Step-by-Step for Kids

Unicorns are magical and beautiful — and drawing one is easier than you think! Follow Parikshet's step-by-step guide to create your own rainbow unicorn.

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Pink, purple, blue, and yellow markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Head

Draw a circle for the unicorn's head. It should be slightly smaller than the body you will draw next. Leave space to the right for the face details.

Step 2: Draw the Body

To the right of the head, draw a large oval for the body — wider and longer than the head. Connect it to the head with a short neck (two curved lines).

Step 3: Add the Horn

On top of the head, draw a long narrow triangle pointing diagonally upward. Add horizontal lines across the horn to make it look like a twisted spiral. This is the unicorn's magical alicorn horn.

Step 4: Draw the Ears

On each side of the horn, draw small pointed ear shapes. Add a smaller triangle inside each ear in a contrasting colour. The ears should peek through the mane.

Step 5: Draw the Flowing Mane

From behind the horn, draw long wavy lines flowing down the neck and behind the head. The mane should look voluminous and flowing — lots of curves and wave shapes. This is the most fun part!

Step 6: Draw the Legs

Below the body oval, draw four slim legs. The front two legs can be slightly forward, the back two slightly behind — as if the unicorn is walking gracefully. Add small oval hooves at the bottom of each leg.

Step 7: Draw the Tail

At the right end of the body, draw a long, flowing tail made of the same wavy lines as the mane. The tail should flow outward and downward in big curves.

Step 8: Add the Face

On the right side of the head circle, add a large, dreamy eye with long lashes. Add a tiny curved nose and a small smile. Draw a circle of rosy blush on the cheek.

Adding Colour

The unicorn body can be white or soft pastel pink. The mane and tail should be rainbow — stripes of pink, purple, blue, and yellow flowing through the waves. The horn is gold or yellow with white highlights. Add rainbow sparkle stars around the unicorn for magic!

Tips from Parikshet

  • The flowing mane is what makes a unicorn look magical — take your time making it big, wavy, and dramatic.
  • Add as many colours to the mane as you like — unicorns are all about colour!
  • A few rainbow sparkles and stars around the unicorn complete the magical atmosphere.
