How to Draw a Chihuahua Puppy: Step-by-Step for Kids
Chihuahuas are tiny dogs with enormous ears and personalities! Their distinctive large ears and apple-dome head make them wonderfully fun to draw.
What You'll Need
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Paper
- Tan, cream, or brown markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Draw the Apple-Dome Head
Draw a large circle for the Chihuahua's head — Chihuahuas have an unusually round, dome-like skull. Make the head surprisingly large compared to the body you will draw later.
Step 2: Add the Giant Ears
On each side of the head, draw two very large triangular ears. Chihuahua ears are enormous — they can be nearly as wide as the head itself. The ears stand upright and tilt slightly outward.
Step 3: Draw the Big Eyes
In the lower half of the head, draw two very large round eyes. Chihuahua eyes are one of the largest eye-to-head ratios of any dog breed. Add shine highlights in each eye.
Step 4: Add the Small Snout
Below the eyes, draw a very small, short snout — just a tiny muzzle bump with a small oval nose at the tip. Chihuahua noses are small and dark. Add a tiny curved smile below.
Step 5: Draw the Tiny Body
Below the head, draw a small rounded oval for the body. The body is tiny compared to the head — that is the Chihuahua's characteristic look. Add a short neck connecting head to body.
Step 6: Draw Short Legs
Add four short, thin legs below the body. Chihuahuas have delicate, fine-boned legs. Draw tiny oval paws at the end of each leg.
Step 7: Add the Curled Tail
Draw a thin tail curling up and over the back — Chihuahuas typically carry their tail in a sickle curve or loosely curled.
Step 8: Add Fur Texture
Add short fur stroke lines around the face, chest, and belly. Inside each ear, add a few light lines to suggest the inner ear fur. Add whisker dots on the muzzle.
Adding Colour
Chihuahuas come in many colours — fawn (light tan), chocolate brown, black, or cream. The inside of the ears is pale pink. The nose is black or dark brown. Add rosy blush circles on the cheeks.
Tips from Parikshet
- The ears are the most important feature — make them genuinely huge or your dog won't look like a Chihuahua!
- The head-to-body ratio should be about 2:1 — head much bigger than the body.
- Chihuahuas often shiver or look nervous — try drawing one wrapped in a tiny blanket for a cute scene!
