A pirate ship drawing combines three fun things: a curved wooden hull, tall masts with sails, and a Jolly Roger flag flying at the top. It looks complex but breaks down into easy curved shapes — even beginners nail it.
🎨 What You Need
- White paper or sketchbook
- HB pencil and rubber
- Black fineliner
- Colouring pencils — brown, white, black, blue
- Ruler for the masts
How to Draw a Pirate Ship
- Draw the hull — a long curved shape like a wide smile across the middle of your page.
- Add the deck line — a curved horizontal line across the top of the hull.
- Cabin at the back — a small rectangle with a curved roof at the right end of the deck.
- Three masts — three vertical lines rising from the deck, the middle one tallest.
- Add the sails — large curved rectangles between the masts, billowing slightly.
- Crow's nest — a small barrel shape near the top of the main mast for the lookout.
- Jolly Roger flag — a flag at the very top with a skull and crossbones.
- Ink and colour — brown for wood, white/cream for sails, blue waves around the bottom of the hull.
🌟 Did You Know?
The famous Jolly Roger flag was used by many real pirates in the 1700s. Different pirates had different designs — Blackbeard's had a horned skeleton, while Calico Jack had crossed swords instead of bones.

How do I draw waves?
Simple wavy lines, three or four parallel, with a few small foam curls on the crests. Don't overdo it.
Why does my ship lean to one side?
Probably the masts aren't straight up. Use a ruler for the masts and check they're perpendicular to the page.
Can I draw cannons?
Yes — small black circles along the side of the hull, with a tiny stick poking out (the barrel).
What colour should the sails be?
Traditionally white or cream. Black sails were used by some pirates to sneak up at night.
