How to Draw a Wrist Watch: Step-by-Step for Kids

Drawing a wrist watch is a great way to practise perspective and technical detail. Here is how to draw a classic analogue watch on a wrist!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Silver, black, and coloured markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Watch Case

Draw a rounded square (called a cushion case) or a circle for the watch face housing. Round watches are classic; square watches look modern. Add a slight 3D perspective by adding a thin edge around the front face.

Step 2: Draw the Watch Face

Inside the watch case, draw the dial face — a slightly smaller version of the case shape. This is where the hands and numbers go. Add a ring detail between the case edge and the dial face.

Step 3: Add Hour Markers

Around the inside edge of the dial, draw twelve small marks — short lines at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 positions, and tiny dots at the other eight positions. These are the hour markers.

Step 4: Draw the Hour and Minute Hands

From the centre of the dial, draw two watch hands. The hour hand is short and fat, the minute hand is long and thin. Position them to show your favourite time.

Step 5: Add the Second Hand and Crown

Draw a very thin, long second hand. On the right side of the watch case, draw the crown — a small cylinder sticking out from the side — used to set the time.

Step 6: Draw the Strap Attachment Lugs

At the top and bottom of the watch case, draw two short rectangular extensions — these are the lugs where the strap attaches to the case.

Step 7: Draw the Watch Strap

From the lugs, draw the leather or rubber strap extending up and down. The strap tapers slightly from the case outward. Add horizontal stitch lines along each edge of the strap.

Step 8: Add Buckle and Holes

On the lower strap section, draw a rectangular buckle and several small oval holes. Add a keeper loop to hold the excess strap end.

Adding Colour

The watch case is silver or gold. The dial face is white, black, or cream. Hands are silver or gold. The strap can be brown leather, black rubber, or silver metal links. The crown and buckle are silver.

Tips from Parikshet

  • The watch hands are the most important detail — make the hour hand clearly shorter and fatter than the minute hand.
  • Adding the twelve hour markers makes the watch immediately recognisable, even if they are just tiny marks.
  • Try drawing the watch at a slight angle (foreshortening the dial into an oval) for a more impressive, 3D perspective look.
