How to Draw the Coronavirus for an Awareness Poster: Step-by-Step for Kids
Drawing the coronavirus as a science illustration helps us understand and learn about it. This guide shows how to draw an accurate coronavirus particle for a science or awareness poster.
What You'll Need
- Pencil
- Compass or round object to trace
- Eraser
- Paper
- Red, orange, and grey markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Draw the Central Circle
Draw a large circle in the centre of your paper using a compass or round object. This is the main body (virion) of the coronavirus particle. Make it fairly large so there is room for all the spike proteins around the outside.
Step 2: Draw the Inner Membrane
Inside the large circle, draw a second slightly smaller circle. The space between the two circles represents the outer envelope membrane of the virus. Shade this ring area lightly.
Step 3: Add the Genetic Material Centre
Inside the inner circle, draw a loose, coiled RNA strand representation — a wavy, twisted line coiling around the interior. This represents the viral RNA (genetic instructions) inside the particle.
Step 4: Draw the Spike Proteins
Around the outside of the large circle, draw approximately 20-25 spike proteins. Each spike is a club-shaped protrusion — a thin stalk with a rounded or T-shaped tip. Space them evenly around the full circumference. These spikes are what give coronavirus its "crown" appearance (corona means crown in Latin).
Step 5: Add the E and M Proteins
In the outer membrane ring between some of the spike proteins, draw small oval or rectangular shapes — these represent the smaller envelope (E) and membrane (M) proteins embedded in the outer membrane.
Step 6: Add Surface Texture
On the outer membrane surface, add a subtle dotted or granular texture to suggest the complex protein surface of the viral particle.
Step 7: Add a Poster Message
Below the virus diagram, write a clear message: "Wash Your Hands", "Stay Safe", or "Protect Each Other". Add a global symbol or hands washing illustration beside the text.
Step 8: Add a Border and Earth Image
Draw a border around the whole poster. In one corner, draw a simple globe to represent Earth and show that this is a worldwide issue requiring worldwide cooperation.
Adding Colour
The main viral body is dark grey or dark red-brown. The spike proteins are lighter — orange or red — to make them visible against the darker body. The RNA coil inside is yellow-gold. The background can be dark blue or black to make the illustration stand out.
Tips from Parikshet
- The spike proteins are the signature feature of coronavirus — without them it is just a circle. Draw them clearly with club-shaped tips.
- Space the spikes evenly all the way around — the "crown" effect only works when spikes cover the entire circumference.
- Adding a bright positive message alongside the scientific illustration turns this into a meaningful poster, not just a scary image.
