How to Draw Morty Smith from Rick and Morty: Step-by-Step for Kids
Morty Smith is one half of the greatest sci-fi comedy duo — the anxious, good-hearted teenage grandson of genius scientist Rick. Here is how to draw him!
What You'll Need
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Paper
- Yellow, white, and blue markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Draw Morty's Large Round Head
Draw a large circle for Morty's head. His head is distinctively round and large — in Rick and Morty's animation style, character heads are quite prominent. Add a wide chin area that broadens toward the bottom.
Step 2: Draw the Short, Messy Hair
Across the top of the head, draw Morty's short, slightly messy hair. It is a uniform warm brown colour and sits close to the head. It is not spiky or styled — just a simple, natural youth haircut.
Step 3: Add the Small Ears
Draw two small, simple ear shapes on the sides of the head — round curves at the ear level. Morty's ears are small and unremarkable.
Step 4: Draw the Eyes
In the lower-centre of the face, draw Morty's simple oval eyes — they are fairly large and express a wide range of worry and anxiety. Add tiny black dot pupils. His eyebrows often show concern — draw them slightly furrowed.
Step 5: Add the Nose and Mouth
Draw a simple round button nose — just a small oval. Add a slightly worried or open mouth below — Morty's default expression is mild anxiety. A slightly open O mouth or a nervous line works well.
Step 6: Draw the White Shirt
Below the head, draw Morty's iconic outfit — a plain white short-sleeved shirt. Draw the collar, the short sleeve ends, and the simple front of the shirt. The shirt is always white, plain, and slightly wrinkled-looking.
Step 7: Add the Yellow Pants
Below the shirt, draw Morty's distinctive yellow pants. They are simple, straight-legged trousers in a solid yellow colour. Add a waistband line at the top.
Step 8: Draw the White Shoes
At the bottom, draw Morty's simple white shoes — low-cut, rounded shoes with no distinctive brand marks. Add small lines at the sole edge to separate the shoe from the leg.
Adding Colour
The hair is warm brown. The shirt is pure white. The pants are bright yellow. The shoes are white. The skin is peach or warm tan. Morty's colour palette is intentionally simple — the contrast between the white shirt and yellow pants is his defining visual.
Tips from Parikshet
- The white shirt and yellow pants are Morty's signature — without these colours it could be any cartoon character.
- Morty always looks slightly worried or anxious — a small furrowed brow and slightly open mouth captures his personality instantly.
- Try drawing Rick next to Morty — Rick is very tall and lanky while Morty is short and round, and the size contrast is half the comedy of the show!
