How to Draw a Pirate Ship: Step-by-Step for Kids
A pirate ship has a curved wooden hull, tall masts, big sails and a skull-and-crossbones flag. Draw the hull first and then the masts.
What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White drawing paper
- Black marker for the outline
- Brown and black pencils
- Blue for the sea
- Coloured pencils or crayons
Step-by-Step: Drawing a Pirate Ship
Step 1: Draw the hull
Draw a curved boat shape, like a crescent moon lying on its back. Make the front (the bow) higher than the back.
Step 2: Add the planks
Draw two or three curved lines along the length of the hull for the wooden planks. Add small circles for the portholes.
Step 3: Draw the masts
From the deck, draw two tall thin vertical lines. Make the front one a little shorter than the back one.
Step 4: Add the sails
On each mast, draw large square sails that bulge in the middle as if filled with wind.
Step 5: Add the rigging
Draw thin lines from the top of the masts to the deck.
Step 6: Draw the flag
At the top of the tallest mast, draw a small flag with a skull and two crossed bones.
Step 7: Add the bowsprit
At the front, draw a pole pointing forward and slightly up from the hull.
Step 8: Draw the sea and outline
Draw wavy lines around the hull for the sea. Trace with a marker and erase the pencil.
Colouring Your Pirate Ship
Use brown for the hull, cream or light yellow for the sails and black for the flag. Colour the sea in blues and add white foam where the ship meets the water.
Tips for Drawing a Pirate Ship
- Make the sails curve outward. Flat sails look like the wind is not blowing.
- Draw the waves overlapping the bottom of the hull so it sits in the water.
