A grasshopper looks complex at first — long legs, segmented body, big eyes — but Parikshet breaks it into simple oval and line shapes that make it approachable for kids aged 6 and above. The side view is the easiest angle to start with.

How to Draw a Grasshopper Step by Step

  1. Draw the head — a rounded square or rectangle at the front. Grasshoppers have a distinctive blocky head.
  2. Add the large eye — one large oval compound eye taking up most of the side of the head.
  3. Draw the antennae — two long, thin antennae extending forward from the top of the head.
  4. Sketch the thorax — the middle body section, slightly larger than the head, connects the head to the abdomen.
  5. Draw the abdomen — the longest section, a tapered oval extending backward and slightly upward.
  6. Add the wings — two narrow wings folded along the back of the abdomen.
  7. Draw the powerful back legs — this is the grasshopper's most distinctive feature. Large, bent back legs with the 'knee' pointing upward.
  8. Add the front and middle legs — two pairs of shorter, thinner legs toward the front.
  9. Colour — bright green for the body, darker green for wing outlines, brown for the legs.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: The back legs are what makes a grasshopper recognisable. Draw the thigh section going forward and upward from the body, then the shin going backward and downward. This bent, powerful shape is the grasshopper's signature.
