The Story

"Why do we celebrate Durga Puja?" Parikshet asked his grandfather one evening. The pandals were going up outside, and the streets were full of fairy lights.

Grandfather sat him down on the verandah swing. "Long, long ago," he began, "there was a goddess so strong that even the mightiest demon could not defeat her. Her name was Durga."

"She rode a lion and carried a weapon in each of her ten hands," Grandfather continued. Parikshet's eyes grew wide. Ten hands? That sounded amazing.

"She protected the world from a wicked demon called Mahishasura. Because of her courage, light won over darkness, and good won over evil."

"That is why we celebrate," Grandfather smiled. "To remember that goodness, courage and kindness can always defeat what is wrong."

That night, when the drums played at the pandal, Parikshet stood very tall. He looked up at Maa Durga and silently promised to always choose kindness — just like she had taught.
